Hanna has taken full advantage of its favorable environment over the last 24 hours, and steady strengthening continues this morning. Hanna is now a hurricane with max sustained winds of 75 mph. The hurricane hunters continue to find falling pressure and an expanding wind field, and deep convection has been wrapping around the center of the storm, closing off the eye wall. Strengthening should continue up to the time of landfall early this afternoon.
The center is currently about 60 miles offshore and landfall looks to take place near, or just south, of Corpus Christi. Hurricane-force winds will be pushing water onshore the next few hours. Storm surge may be as high as 5 feet in spots.
Heavy rainfall will lead to flooding issues across parts of South Texas and northeastern Mexico through the weekend. Isolated rainfall totals of up to 18 inches are possible.
